Can I Add a Battery to My Existing Solar System?

Yes, in most cases you can add a battery to an existing solar system. You may be able to keep your current panels and inverter, add a battery that works alongside the existing system, or replace an older inverter with a modern hybrid model.

The right option depends on your inverter, available surplus solar, switchboard, electricity usage and whether you want blackout protection.

The most important step is checking the existing system before choosing a battery. A battery that looks suitable on paper may not be the best match for your home, and choosing a larger battery does not automatically mean better savings.

What needs to be checked first?

1Your existing inverter

The first question is whether the inverter is designed to work with a battery. Hybrid inverters can manage both solar generation and battery charging, but they normally only support approved battery models.

If you have a standard solar inverter, an AC-coupled battery may allow the existing system to remain in place.

2The size of your solar system

A battery needs enough surplus solar during the day to charge properly. If most of your solar is already being used by the home, there may not be much energy left to store.

The ideal battery is usually one that charges regularly and is used regularly. A battery that rarely fills may be too large for the available solar production. A battery that empties too early may be too small for the household’s evening needs.

Can I receive the federal battery discount with existing solar?

Yes. Eligible batteries can be connected to new or existing solar-panel systems. You do not need to install an entirely new solar system simply to access the federal battery discount.

Eligibility depends on the battery, usable capacity, installation date, installer accreditation and the current program requirements. Since 1 May 2026, support is tiered by battery size, which makes correct sizing more important.

Good to know: installing extra capacity only to receive a larger total rebate does not necessarily provide better value. The battery should still be sized around your actual solar generation and household usage.

Can I add more solar panels at the same time?

Yes, provided the roof, inverter, network approval and existing equipment allow it. Increasing the solar capacity can make sense when the current system does not generate enough surplus energy, household electricity use has increased, or an electric vehicle has been added.

Adding panels to an older system is not always straightforward. The original panel model may no longer be available, the inverter may already be at its limit, or older cabling and rooftop equipment may need attention.

Do the existing solar panels need to be removed?

Usually not. Solar panels normally stay in place when a battery is added.

Will the battery power my home during a blackout?

It can, but only if the system is designed for backup operation.

A backup-capable system normally needs a compatible battery and inverter, suitable changeover or gateway equipment, switchboard alterations and clearly selected backup circuits.

Essential-load backup

Essential-load backup usually covers selected circuits such as refrigerators, lights, internet equipment, selected power points and garage doors.

Whole-home backup

Whole-home backup can keep most or all circuits connected, but this does not mean every appliance can operate at the same time. Large loads such as ducted air conditioning, electric hot water, ovens, pool equipment and EV chargers may exceed the battery or inverter output if they run together.

What we commonly see on-site

Across Thornlands, Cleveland, Victoria Point, Redland Bay and the wider Brisbane bayside area, we regularly find systems described as “battery ready” that are not as flexible as the owner expected.

The term battery ready may mean the inverter supports one specific battery range, the switchboard has some space available, or cabling was installed for a future upgrade. It does not necessarily mean that any brand or battery size can be connected.

We also see homeowners quoted very large batteries without anyone checking their solar production or electricity usage. This can leave them with an expensive battery that does not fully charge during normal conditions.

Replacing a relatively new, reliable inverter purely for the sake of installing a battery may not be worthwhile. The decision should be based on compatibility, condition and long-term value.

Can I mix different battery and inverter brands?

Sometimes, but not with every system.

DC-coupled batteries normally need to be specifically approved for use with the hybrid inverter. AC-coupled batteries provide more flexibility because they include their own inverter, but the complete system still needs to be designed and approved correctly.

What about three-phase homes?
