When to get your solar checked

An error message does not always mean the inverter needs replacing. A fault may involve the inverter, panels, wiring, connections or another part of the system.

Get advice if:

  • Your inverter shows a persistent warning or repeatedly shuts down.
  • Generation has dropped compared with a similar period or the system is no longer producing.
  • You can see damaged panels or loose equipment from a safe position on the ground.
  • You suspect storm, hail, water or pest damage.
  • Your monitoring app is offline and you cannot tell whether the system is working.

A higher power bill alone does not confirm a solar fault. Changes in electricity use, tariffs, weather or shading can also affect the result. Inverter readings and monitoring history can help with the assessment.

Safety first: Do not climb onto the roof, open electrical covers or touch damaged equipment. After a storm or flood, keep away from panels, batteries, wiring and switches that may be damaged; do not try to shut down or restart the system yourself. Solar equipment can remain live even when the home's power is off. Arrange an inspection by a licensed electrician. For fire or immediate danger, call 000. Read the Queensland Electrical Safety Office storm guidance.

Finding the fault before choosing the repair

1. Tell us what is happening

Send your suburb, inverter brand and model if known, the fault message and when the problem started. Mention any recent storms or roof work.

2. Have the system assessed

The checks depend on the symptoms, system and safe access. They may include the inverter's fault history, panels, cabling, connections, isolators and system output.

3. Compare the next steps

The diagnosis helps establish whether the practical option is a repair, replacement component or a wider system upgrade. Age, compatibility, parts availability and any applicable manufacturer warranty all matter.

For a known inverter problem, see our solar inverter repair service. If you mainly want to understand the condition of your system, see solar inspections.

What affects the cost and timing?

The fault, roof access, system size, replacement parts and testing required can all affect the work involved. Some problems can be addressed during an assessment; others need parts or a separate repair visit.

Ask us to confirm the inspection or call-out charge, what it includes and whether any further repair work needs a separate quote. Availability and repair timing need to be confirmed for your job.

What to include in your enquiry

A few useful details can help us understand the problem:

  • Your suburb and the best number to reach you.
  • The inverter brand/model and the exact warning or fault code, if known.
  • When the issue began and whether it follows a storm, power outage or roof work.
  • A monitoring screenshot or recent generation figures, if available.
  • Whether you need an assessment, repair advice or information for an insurer.

Use the contact form for the details, or email existing screenshots and safely taken photos to info@solairelectrical.com.au. Do not approach damaged equipment or climb onto the roof to take photos.

Solar repair questions

Can you repair the system rather than replace it?

That depends on the fault and the condition of the equipment. A damaged component does not automatically mean the whole system needs replacing. An assessment helps compare the repair options with the cost and compatibility of replacement equipment.

What if my original installer is no longer available?

Send us the system details and any paperwork you still have. Ask us to confirm whether we can assess your particular equipment and what documents would be useful. Manufacturer warranty support depends on the product and its warranty terms.

Do I need a repair or an insurance inspection report?

If you need technical findings for an insurance claim, check your insurer's requirements before booking. Our solar insurance inspection report page explains that service. The insurer decides coverage and claim acceptance.

What if the panels need to come off for roof work?

That is a different job from fault finding. See solar panel removal and reinstallation and tell us about the planned roof work and timing.
