A closer look at electrical condition

When is thermal imaging useful?

Unusual heat can help direct an investigation before a problem becomes obvious from the outside. A thermal inspection is useful when you have a specific concern or want a clearer picture of the condition of accessible equipment.

Homes & switchboards

For homeowners concerned about an ageing switchboard, recurring trips, discolouration or changes in how a circuit is operating.

Solar system owners

For systems with reduced output, suspected panel damage or concerns after hail. Thermal images help us identify areas that need closer investigation.

Property managers

For owners and managers who need documented findings and a practical plan for electrical maintenance or follow-up work.

Concerned about an immediate electrical hazard?

Do not open a switchboard, touch damaged equipment or climb onto the roof to investigate. Keep clear and call for advice. A routine thermal inspection is not an emergency response service.

Two areas. One practical approach.

What we can inspect

We agree the scope with you before the visit. Access, equipment condition, operating load and weather can affect what can be inspected and how useful the images will be.

Switchboard thermal imaging

We look for unusual temperature patterns in accessible equipment and compare them with the installation’s condition and operating load.

  • Main switches and circuit breakers
  • Hot water circuits and switching equipment
  • Accessible cable terminations and connections
  • Contactors and other equipment within the agreed scope
  • Visible signs of overheating, deterioration or damage

A hot connection may need further investigation. Thermal imaging alone cannot establish the cause or prove that the rest of the installation is safe.

If rectification is needed, we can discuss repairs or a switchboard upgrade.

Solar thermal imaging

We assess accessible solar panels and relevant system components for thermal patterns that warrant investigation, supported by visual checks and electrical testing.

  • Localised hot spots and uneven panel temperatures
  • Panel condition following suspected hail damage
  • Patterns associated with underperforming panels
  • Accessible solar connections and equipment within scope
  • Findings that need further testing or repairs

Sunlight, shading, wind, reflections and system operation all affect the image. We interpret what we see in context rather than treating every bright area as a fault.

For a broader system condition check, see our solar inspection service.

More than a thermal photograph

Thermal imaging + electrical testing

A thermal camera shows surface temperature patterns. It helps us decide where to look more closely, but it cannot see through every enclosure or identify every electrical fault.

We combine images with visual findings, the equipment’s operating conditions and suitable electrical tests. This gives you a more useful explanation of the issue and the next step.

What a thermal image cannot promise

  • A clear image does not guarantee that no faults exist.
  • A hot spot does not, by itself, prove hail damage or a loose connection.
  • Temperature readings depend on conditions and camera settings.
  • Thermal imaging does not replace required electrical safety testing.

We explain any inspection limitations in the findings rather than overstating what the image shows.

What to expect

From your first call to clear next steps

01 / PLAN THE INSPECTION

Tell us what is happening

Let us know the property location, equipment involved and any symptoms or recent storm damage. We confirm the proposed scope, access requirements and quote.

02 / INSPECT & TEST

Assess the installation

We carry out the agreed visual checks, thermal imaging and appropriate testing. Where safe operation or conditions limit the inspection, we explain what could not be assessed.

03 / EXPLAIN THE FINDINGS

Know what needs attention

We explain what we found, the supporting evidence and the recommended action. If an immediate hazard is identified, making the affected equipment safe takes priority.

04 / DOCUMENT & FOLLOW THROUGH

Make an informed decision

You receive the agreed inspection documentation and practical next steps. Any further testing, repairs or replacement work is discussed with you.

What these inspections can uncover

These examples show how thermal imaging supports an investigation. Findings come from the overall inspection and testing, not the colours in a thermal image alone.

Switchboard example

Loose connections at a main switch and hot water breaker

Thermal imaging highlighted heat at the main switch and hot water circuit breaker. Further investigation identified loose connections.

The old devices were replaced, and the whole house was tested as part of a safety check, with a report provided to the customer.

The useful outcome: the customer received an explanation of the faults, rectification and a documented safety check rather than just a thermal photograph.

Solar inspection example

Investigating hot spots after hail damage

On hail-damaged solar systems inspected by Solair, thermal imaging showed localised hot spots that needed closer assessment. Inspection and testing informed the recommendations for damaged panels and replacement systems.

The daylight photograph shows visible panel damage. It is a separate example and is not presented as a matched view of the thermal image above.

Customer case

Failed panels identified and the system made safe

In one solar inspection, thermal imaging and short-circuit testing identified failed panels that posed a fire hazard. The affected system was immediately isolated, the broken panels were removed and a report was provided to the customer.

In that case, the insurer approved the claim within two weeks and a new system was installed the following week.

This is one customer’s outcome, not a promise of approval or timing. Insurance decisions and installation schedules vary.

Tell us what you have noticed. We can discuss whether thermal imaging is suitable and what inspection scope makes sense for your property.

Useful evidence, clearly explained

See what an inspection report can look like

Your agreed report brings the inspection findings together, with supporting photographs and recommendations relevant to the work carried out.

  • The equipment and areas inspected
  • Relevant visual and thermal evidence
  • Findings from the inspection and testing
  • Recommended actions and inspection limitations

For solar insurance matters, confirm your insurer’s requirements before booking. The insurer makes its own decision about cover and the evidence it needs.

Common questions

Before you book

Can thermal imaging find every electrical fault?

No. It shows surface temperature patterns under the conditions present at the time. Hidden components, low loads and intermittent faults can limit what is visible. We use it alongside other inspection methods and testing.

Does a hot spot always mean something is faulty?

No. Normal operation, different loads, reflections and environmental conditions can create temperature differences. We investigate unusual patterns and interpret them alongside the equipment’s condition and test results.

Will the power need to be turned off?

Some thermal observations need equipment to be operating, while other checks or repairs may require isolation. We discuss access and any expected interruption with you. Safe work requirements determine how the inspection proceeds.

Can you inspect solar panels after a hailstorm?

Yes, we can assess the system within an agreed scope. Visible damage, thermal findings and suitable testing may all be relevant. Thermal imaging alone does not establish the cause of damage. If you need documentation for a claim, ask about our solar insurance inspection report service.

What if you find an unsafe component?

We explain the concern and take appropriate steps to make the affected equipment safe. Depending on the issue, this may involve isolation and further repair or replacement work. We discuss the recommended next steps with you.

How much does a thermal imaging inspection cost?

The quote depends on the equipment, access, inspection scope, testing and reporting required. Send us your location and a short description of the job so we can confirm the appropriate scope and pricing.

What should I send when I enquire?

Your suburb, whether the concern involves solar or a switchboard, and a description of any symptoms. If you already have photographs or inverter messages, let us know. Do not remove covers or access the roof to take photographs.

Do you provide thermal imaging across Brisbane and Redlands?

We service Brisbane, Redlands and surrounding areas. Include your suburb when you contact us so we can confirm availability for your location and the work you need.
