SMA Inverter Error Codes

SMA Inverter Error Codes

SMA Inverter Error Codes

If your SMA inverter is displaying an error code or has stopped feeding into the grid, you might be dealing with one of many SMA inverter fault events. These event numbers, often shown on the display or monitoring software, indicate specific issues such as grid voltage fluctuations, insulation faults, DC overcurrent, or internal hardware failures.

Some of these are simple grid-based warnings like Event 102 (Grid Overvoltage), while others such as Event 6406 (DC Overcurrent) or Event 3501 (Insulation Failure) require urgent inspection. To help, we’ve compiled a full list of common SMA inverter error codes, their causes, and the recommended corrective actions.

Still unsure or need a licensed technician to take a look? Call Solair Electrical on 0405 685 441 to book a professional SMA inverter inspection in Brisbane, Redlands, or the Gold Coast.

Event 102 – Grid Overvoltage Fast

Cause: Grid voltage or impedance at the inverter's connection point is too high.
Solution: Check grid voltage range; if consistently high, contact your grid operator. If voltage is normal, call SMA Service Line.

Event 202 – Grid Under voltage Fast

Cause: No grid voltage, AC cable issue, or undervoltage at the inverter's connection.
Solution: Check AC breakers, wiring, and voltage levels. If values are within range and issue persists, call SMA.

Event 301 – Voltage Increase Protection

Cause: Grid impedance or voltage too high, inverter disconnects to maintain power quality.
Solution: Confirm voltage range is stable. If issue recurs, contact your electricity provider or SMA.

Event 401 – Island Grid Detected

Cause: Inverter is not detecting grid connection and has stopped for safety.
Solution: Check for frequency fluctuations. May require grid analysis or SMA support.

Event 501 – Grid Frequency Disturbance

Cause: Frequency outside operating limits.
Solution: Monitor for recurring fluctuations. If frequent, contact your grid operator or SMA Service.

Event 3401 – DC Overvoltage (Input A)

Cause: PV voltage exceeds inverter’s DC limit. May cause damage.
Solution: Disconnect PV input immediately. Measure DC voltage and confirm system design meets specs.

Event 3501 – Insulation Failure

Cause: Ground fault detected in the PV array.
Solution: Test array insulation and check for earth leakage. Inverter will not operate until resolved.

Event 3902 – Generator Voltage Too Low

Cause: PV voltage too low for startup.
Solution: Wait for sunlight to increase or remove snow/dirt from panels.

Event 3903 – Generator Voltage Too High

Cause: PV voltage exceeds acceptable DC startup range.
Solution: Wait until system returns to operating range.

Events 6002–6006 – Device Interference (Self-Diagnosis)

Cause: Internal diagnostic fault.
Solution: Contact SMA Service Line for further investigation.

Event 6305 – Device Interference

Cause: Internal device error.
Solution: Contact SMA.

Event 6402 – Overtemperature (Self-Diagnosis)

Cause: Inverter overheating internally.
Solution: Contact SMA. Unit may require fan replacement or repositioning.

Event 6406 – DC Overcurrent (Input A)

Cause: Excessive current detected at module input.
Solution: Check grid voltage and system loads. Contact SMA if issue recurs.

Event 6415 – Device Interference (Self-Diagnosis)

Cause: Unspecified hardware interference.
Solution: Contact SMA for service advice.

Event 6450 – Energy Transfer Not Possible

Cause: Inverter cannot export energy—possibly due to high grid voltage, dirty/shaded modules, or low sunlight.
Solution: Clean modules, check grid voltage range, inspect array for faults.

Event 10265 – PLC Communication Impaired

Cause: Interference in the power line communication network.
Solution: Ensure AC cables between inverters and Sunny Multigate are laid separately. If still unresolved, contact SMA.
