Australia’s Energy Market Is Changing: What It Means for Homeowners and Small Businesses

Default electricity prices are expected to fall for many South East Queensland customers

The Australian Energy Regulator has released its final Default Market Offer prices for 2026–27. The Default Market Offer, or DMO, is a regulated safety-net price for standing offer electricity plans in New South Wales, South East Queensland and South Australia. It also acts as a reference price when comparing market offers.

From 1 July 2026, the AER says prices will fall for most households and small businesses on the DMO. In South East Queensland, residential flat-rate standing offer prices are set to fall by 7.2% compared with the previous year. Small business reductions in South East Queensland are set to range from 10.4% to 14.0%, depending on tariff type.

The important detail: this does not mean every customer’s bill automatically drops by the same amount. The DMO does not apply to every plan, and many customers are on market offers rather than standing offers.

Batteries are changing how electricity prices behave

Battery storage is becoming more important because it can absorb excess solar and renewable energy during the day, then discharge energy during the evening peak when demand is higher.

Australian Government reporting based on AEMO’s Q1 2026 data says renewables supplied 46.5% of National Electricity Market generation in the March quarter of 2026. It also reported that batteries were shifting more daytime solar into the evening peak, helping moderate prices during high-demand periods.

For homeowners, this is why batteries are getting more attention. A battery may help you use more of your own solar instead of exporting during the day and buying electricity back at night.

For small businesses, batteries may become more relevant if you have high evening usage, expensive peak-period demand, backup-power concerns, or solar production that does not line up well with your operating hours.

Older solar systems should not be ignored

EVs and vehicle-to-grid technology are becoming part of the energy conversation

Vehicle-to-grid, often called V2G, allows a compatible EV battery to discharge electricity back into the grid. Vehicle-to-home, or V2H, allows a compatible EV battery to help power a home. Australian Government EV guidance says new standards have been approved to make it easier for manufacturers to bring V2G and V2H capable vehicles and chargers to Australia.
